City of Johannesburg Announced as Host City Partner for Smarter Mobility Africa 2025

Johannesburg to Lead Africa’s Mobility Future as Host of Flagship Summit on Transport Innovation

Smarter Mobility Africa, the continent’s flagship platform for transport and mobility transformation, is proud to announce the City of Johannesburg as the Host City Partner for Smarter Mobility Africa 2025, taking place from 1–2 October 2025 at the Sandton Convention Centre.

Now entering its seventh year, the Smarter Mobility Africa (SMA) summit convenes bold leaders from across Africa and the globe to rethink how people and goods move. The summit aligns with October Transport Month and Africa Mobility Month, and is widely recognised as a key platform for accelerating innovation, policy, investment, and partnerships across public and private sectors.

This year’s announcement marks a major milestone for the City of Johannesburg, as it continues to position itself as a pioneering urban hub for smarter, more inclusive, and more sustainable mobility.

“We are proud to be the Host City Partner for Smarter Mobility Africa 2025. Johannesburg is a city of movement – of goods, people, ideas, and opportunity. Hosting this landmark event allows us to showcase our commitment to modern, resilient, and people-centred transport systems that enable inclusive growth and sustainable urban living.”

— Lutando Maboza, Executive Director, City of Johannesburg

From electric buses and minibus taxi digitalisation to traffic management, cycling infrastructure, and transit-oriented development, the City of Johannesburg is already implementing a wide range of mobility initiatives aimed at creating a connected and climate-resilient city.

Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Zweli Nyathi, informed that “as the custodian of the City’s roads and related roads infrastructure, JRA is pleased to be part of this significant engagement. The JRA is transforming our infrastructure to meet the demands of a modern city. Smarter Mobility Africa is a critical platform for us to share our journey and adopt game-changing innovations. We are actively embracing Al for operations, green energy solutions, and advanced technologies to manage traffic, combat infrastructure theft, and create a seamless experience for road users. This event is key to accelerating our adoption of the tools and partnerships needed to build more sustainable and intelligent network.”

A Shared Vision for Smarter African Cities

“Johannesburg is a symbol of African ambition – and a fitting city to lead this next chapter for Smarter Mobility Africa.”

Ben Pullen, Group Director of Mobility, VUKA Group

“As Africa’s urban centres grow and continue to be revitalised, so must our mobility systems. Smarter Mobility Africa brings together city leaders, fleet operators, transport authorities, entrepreneurs, and investors to turn shared challenges into collaborative solutions.”
