Founded in May 2025, Energy 4 Hope is a registered Non-Profit Company and a proud venture of Circular Energy, operating under South Africa’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework. Our mission is simple yet powerful: turn solar waste into social value.
South Africa now has a growing volume of end-of-service solar modules and batteries as the renewable energy sector has developed. Untested, these products often enter informal resale and re-use channels, posing a danger to users and undermining the value of renewable energy. Conversely, the EPR regulatory framework and Energy 4 Hope’s rigorous testing standards offer a credible alternative: to ensure that only safe, high-performing equipment is put back into service, while non-compliant items are responsibly recycled.

In rural South Africa, the glow of a solar lamp illuminating a child’s schoolbook signals a profound shift – from limitation to opportunity. For thousands of children, studying, playing sport and engaging in social activities after dark is now possible thanks to Energy 4 Hope, an initiative dedicated to transforming end-of-service solar PV modules and batteries into tools for education, safety and community upliftment.
The challenge
At the heart of Energy 4 Hope’s model is its testing-refurbishment donation process. The process starts with an inspection for visible damage. Next, non-destructive tests check electrical output, insulation and thermal stability. Only units that pass all tests are certified for re-use and donated, resulting in these products being removed from the waste stream, which is particularly important as solar products are banned from landfills.
This process extends the lifespan of the products by many years – those that fail are responsibly recycled, with materials safely recovered, thereby contributing to secondary circular markets. Equipment that meets certification requirements is donated to schools, community centres and other institutions.

Pilot Project: iKhethelo Children’s Village
In December 2025, Energy 4 Hope launched its first pilot at iKhethelo Children’s Village, KwaZulu-Natal – home to 45 orphaned and vulnerable youths. PV modules donated by Globeleq were installed after rigorous testing, creating a safe, sustainable energy solution.
Partnerships power progress
Energy 4 Hope is more than a channel for donation: it’s a platform for collaboration. Producers and importers can donate end-of-service equipment for testing, co-fund installations and support skills training.
Equipped with a custom-designed truck and trailer, and purpose-built transportation crates, the initiative guarantees the safe, compliant transportation of the collected renewable equipment to avoid breakages, with the added capability for field inspections. This secure logistics chain is supported by the active participation of local NGOs and technicians. Their involvement at every stage turns a technical installation into a community-led success story, to bridge the gap between high standard engineering and grassroots development.
