According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), food insecurity has emerged as a global crisis following the global economic meltdown. According to the 2004 report of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on the state of food insecurity in the world, more than 814 million people in developing countries are undernourished. Of these people, 204 million live in countries of sub-Saharan Africa, including South Africa.
Despite the political and economic advances seen in South Africa since 1994, the country is plagued by poverty and unemployment and, following the recent global economic crisis, by steep food and fuel prices, high-energy tariffs and increasing interest rates. These adverse conditions have placed severe pressure on ordinary South Africans already struggling to meet their basic household needs.
Rise Against Hunger, an international hunger relief organization that distributes food and life-changing aid to the world’s most vulnerable was established in 1998 by Ray Buchanan in Raleigh, North Carolina, United States. Now, a massive global movement, Rise Against Hunger aims to mobilise the necessary resources to end hunger by the year 2030.
Doing their part for the community, the management and staff of Montana Crossing and SA Corporate Real Estate (Limited) have decided to collaborate with Rise Against Hunger to provide and pack 20 000 meals on November 30, 2019. These meals will feed 77 children- consisting of five meals a week for an entire year. These meals will be distributed through Rise Against Hunger’s Early Childhood Development (ECD) connect program.
Audrey Nkunzi Marketing Manager for Montana Crossing said that this initiative is an important one as food insecurity in South Africa is a growing epidemic. “Now, in our second year, I invite anyone and everyone to join us on November 30th, to make a difference this Festive Season. Making a change starts with oneself and if we join hands we can influence a bigger change and make a bigger impact. I would also like to thank Rise Against Hunger for their amazing work both globally and locally and we are honoured to be a part of this programme,” she said.
The campaign takes place at the Montana Crossing Shopping Centre on 30 November 2019 from 10am. The first 50 people who register will receive a Montana Crossing hamper.
