Next Tuesday, 27th February, Polyco, in partnership with the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, Border-Kei Chamber of Commerce and Buffalo City Metropolitan Development Agency, will be launching the first of three new Packa-Ching buy back centres to their existing two buy back centres, that will be opened in the Eastern Cape before the end of March 2024.
The first of three will be located in Amalinda, East London, with Polyco CEO, Patricia Pillay formally handing over the new centre to Buffalo City Mayor Princess Faku who will also deliver the keynote address at the launch.
These buy back centres form part of Polyco’s flagship Packa-Ching programme which focuses on rolling out recycling infrastructure to communities in South Africa who do not have waste management services. Community members, in particular waste-reclaimers, are paid for the recyclable packaging material (such as plastics, glass, metal and board) they collect and drop off at the static buy back centres, which creates a win-win situation of a cleaner environment while these reclaimers are provided with a steady income stream.
Polyco is a registered Producer Policy Organisation (PRO) under national government’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) programme, which aims to reduce plastics waste in the country by investing in plastics collection and recycling businesses on behalf of their 650+ members. Polyco has rolled out a number of programmes aimed at promoting the recycling and collection of plastics packaging and adding over 300 000 tonnes of recycling capacity growth through their 140 project partnerships.
