SAPOA welcomes the EPC extension granted by the DMRE

The South African Property Owners Association (SAPOA) this morning welcomed the DMRE’s granting it of a 3year extension on the mandatory display of energy performance certificates (EPC’s).

As SAPOA, we have today noted with appreciation that the Minister has signed an amendment to the applicable Regulations, to extend the deadline to publicly display EPC’s from 7 December 2022, for a period of 3 (three) years to 7 December 2025. This has been gazetted today and means that all property owners now have a further period of three years in order to comply with the Regulations.

The regulations form part of the goals set out in the post-2015 National Energy Efficiency Strategy, which aims to get owners to reduce the energy consumption of their buildings by 16% by 2030 and make them aware of the consumption levels of their buildings.

In the same Gazette, SAPOA indicated that certain other proposed amendments to the Regulations were published, with public comment thereon due by 25 December 2022.

Our team will study these proposed amendments and ensure that SAPOA’s comment is provided timeously, and we will continue with our efforts to work with the DMRE and to establish the proposed joint technical committee in order to deal with all the other technical matters raised by our members.

SAPOA once again reiterates its call on the property industry to continue supporting various climate change initiatives and to continue with projects which reduce Greenhouse emissions in support of government’s obligations to comply with COP26 commitments.
