Windaba 2024 Pioneering South Africa’s Low-Carbon Future

Windaba 2024, South Africa’s premier wind energy conference, is pleased to announce the opening of registrations for its much-anticipated event, set to take place from 01 – 03 October 2024 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC).

Windaba has firmly established itself as the only African owned and managed Event for Wind Energy stakeholders active on the African continent, bringing together industry leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders in the renewable energy sector.

Organised by the South African Wind Energy Association (SAWEA) and supported by the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), Windaba 2024 celebrates its 13th year as the foremost gathering for the continent.

As the representative voice of the wind industry in South Africa, SAWEA constantly works towards facilitating dialogue between the wind sector and all key stakeholders. Continuous engagement and alignment between the private and public sector enables it to make impactful strides as the wind energy sector in South Africa.

This year’s event promises to deliver more cutting-edge insights and discussions, emphasising the sector’s growth and resilience. The 2023 program featured over 110 distinguished speakers, more than 27 conference sessions, and over 900 delegates.

“Windaba 2024 is more than a conference; it’s a catalyst for advancing South Africa’s renewable energy agenda,” said Morongoa Ramaboa], Chief Communications Officer of SAWEA. “With a strong emphasis on promoting ambitious and consistent energy policies, SAWEA is dedicated to harnessing our nation’s abundant wind resources for resilient and sustainable development.”

Event Highlights

Preceding the main conference, Windaba Connect, a special networking session, will take place on 01 October, 2024, setting the stage for impactful connections and collaborations. The official programme will kick off on 02 October 2024, emphasising the theme of “Building Resilience Through Wind Energy,” showcasing innovative strategies and technologies driving the nation towards a greener, more resilient future. The conference will conclude on 03 October 2024 with robust industry discussions and culminating in an industry award ceremony commending pioneers in the sector for their innovative solutions that advance the wind sector’s agenda and positively contribute to South Africa’s national grid.

“As global leaders in the energy transition, Windaba 2024 provides a critical platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration,” commented Ramaboa. “We aim to demonstrate how wind energy can drive economic growth while mitigating climate impacts.”

Wind impact

According to the GWEC Global Wind Report 2023, global installed wind energy capacity reached a staggering 906 GW in 2022, a 9% year-on-year growth.

In 2022, wind energy generation witnessed a record increase of 265 TWh (up 14%), reaching over 2,100 TWh, as reported by the IEA Wind Electricity Tracking. This surge signifies wind energy’s substantial contribution to global electricity production, making it the second-highest growing renewable power technology. The International Energy Agency (IEA) envisions wind energy generation reaching approximately 7,400 TWh by 2030, with annual capacity additions increasing from the current average of 75 GW to 350 GW to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

In South Africa’s context, as the technology and market mature, there has been a 50% reduction in wind energy costs, from R1.88/kWh to R0.49/kWh, positioning wind energy as a more cost-effective and reliable energy source with an installed capacity of 3,442 MW.

Windaba 2024 invites stakeholders across the energy sector to participate in shaping the future of renewable energy in South Africa and beyond. Early registration is now open, offering attendees the opportunity to secure their place at this influential event. Don’t miss this chance to network with industry leaders and contribute to the sustainable energy solutions of tomorrow.
